I remember sitting at my usual writing post near the Boathouse cafe in
Central Park (NYC). One of the penthouse ladies was dispensing pieces of
a bag of chocolate croissants to the resident swan-pair and their
goslings. I looked farther onto the lake and saw ducks eyeing the bits of
bread jealously. And then I looked to my left and saw a homeless couple
who were looking at the bag of croissants and the woman with the $400
shoes with the same look in their eyes, and I hoped, at that moment, that
if I ever became toast so thick that I couldn't see my own edges, that
I'd have good friends who would be there with a bread knife.
