Re: RATs-VORTEX in NY
Hi everyone.
VORTEX is bringing this wonderful production to HERE in NY for two weeks. It is
a wonderful, original musical. Ultimately uplifting. I met some of you at the
RAT conference in Austin a few years back. This is the first time that VORTEX
will be in NY with a show. I hope those of you in the NY area will try to
check it out and support your Austin RATS.
Regards--

AUSTIN, TEXAS’ ACCLAIMED VORTEX Repertory Company
MAKES NEW YORK DEBUT
DESPAIR’S BOOK OF DREAMS AND THE SOMETIMES RADIO
2 Weeks Only! March 2 - 11 at HERE
“It’s a dark and jarring story that Smith and his vehicle weave for us,
a sad clown’s dance through the gory alleys of allegory...eerie and
effective”
-- Austin Chronicle
“skates the line of mythology that only Elvis and Jeff Buckley occupy...
By confronting the spirit of thwarted dreams, ‘Despair’s’ is sure to
haunt the viewer long after leaving the theater” -- CitySearch
VORTEX Repertory Company of Austin, Texas makes its New York Premiere on March
2nd at HERE with Despair’s Book of Dreams and Sometimes Radio, an offbeat new
musical theater piece by Kirk Smith, directed by Bonnie Cullum. The piece won
five separate awards from the Austin Circle of Theaters, including best
director, actor, scenery, lighting, and sound. The production was also named one
of the Top 10 productions of 2000 by The Austin Chronicle (along with Patrick
Marber’s Closer, Rude Mechanicals WAR, and Mac Wellman’s Terminal Hip.)
Despair’s Book of Dreams and Sometimes Radio is the tale of Connie, a
washed up poet who spends his time rebuilding an antique radio. As he
works, hetalks, telling stories, complaining, and rejoicing. Eventually, the
music in his head begins to play out loud -- thanks to a cellist, guitarist,
and
pianist incorporated into the set as a dead plant, a lamp, and a hat
rack, respectively. As the night progresses, the visions in Connie’s head
become more potent. Finally, the radio begins to broadcast. Sounds come in bits
and pieces, all strange and disconnected. Gradually we begin to make sense
of the stories and recognize three “radio voices” as people from his past.
Despair’s Book of Dreams and Sometimes Radio is the waking dreamscape of a
lonely, abandoned man whose memories both nurture and terrorize.
VORTEX Repertory Company has been presenting shows in Austin, Texas for
over a decade. They have presented shows by internationally renowned
artists including Annie Sprinkle, Tim Miller, Karen Finley, and Holly
Hughes. According to The Austin Chronicle, the Vortex “has been on the
vanguard of new art, nudging us into the future with original plays,
musicals, even operas that push the boundaries of convention in terms of
subject matter, genre, text, narrative, design, movement, sound, [and]
music.”
Despair’s Book of Dreams and Sometimes Radio runs March 2 - 11, Fridays
at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 7:30pm & 10:30pm, and Sundays at 3:00pm &
7:30pm.
