Re: RAT, The dramaturgy of...
Kudos to Liz Ware for her eloquent articulations
regarding our current thread.
I am glad Liz piped in because she plays an
important part in my own career's examination of
productions, audience and responses.
In June of 2000, Liz and I co-produced a staged
reading of "Stations of Desire", the internet
collaboration conceived of and edited by Caridad
Svich which included the writings of 11 other,
talented playwrights. Many of you may remember
this event, spearheaded by Brad Rothbart, in
which a number of theatre companies from around
the country staged a reading of this piece on the
same day and time and then "plugged into" one
another through ICQ.
I was proud of our company's dedication to the
project and very pleased with our reading. That
said, I was never happier with an audience
response to a piece than I was with the response
to "Stations". It was a challenging, beautiful,
epic, multi-layered script and the audience was
right there the whole time. After the reading, I
moderated an extremely thoughtful discussion and
was ceaselessly impressed with the insights of
the audience and their passion for the piece. It
was all too wonderful (I have it all recorded if
anyone's interested).
what was interesting about this audience was that
there were 7 people in attendance.
If those 7 people, and no one else, attended all
of my productions, I would feel my work and the
work I develop would resound forever.
my best,
=====
