The Undermain Theatre presents
SWEDISH TALES OF WOE at the Ohio Theatre
Swedish Tales of Woe
A Play Cycle by Erik Ehn Directed by Bruce DuBose
Award winning playwright Erik Ehn examines the symbolic landscape of
Swedish folk tales in a two play cycle, presented by the Undermain Theatre.
In the first play, Gold into Mud, a boy leaves his home accompanied by his
trusty weathervane rooster. They encounter a confused giant consumed with
spinning gold thread into mud and straw. In Stripping for the Dead Man, an
impoverished Gypsy prince seeks his fortune to win his lover's hand in
marriage. The only problem is that he must die in order to collect it.
All the while, the Sun and Moon battle for dominance of the sky and a
lonely mermaid seeks out her lost love.
The Undermain Theatre and Erik Ehn continue their artistic alliance with
these pieces which probe the absurd cruelty of fairy tales and Ehn's
fascination with the life and work of playwright August Strindberg. The
folk tales are told using masks, movement, projections, and puppetry in an
expressive and minimal poetic language, punctuated by an arresting musical
score.
