RAT Re: Dramaturgy

As a lurker who tries not to get into this, I'll try to be brief. I have
worked with people I think are good dramaturgs and people who are bad
dramaturgs. People who are good dramaturgs tend to use their own knowledge,
intelligence, and talent to make me think harder (rather than, for example
sitting down and telling me what lines do and don't work, a good dramaturg
is apt to give me a book of poems to read that the play reminded her of). I
also think that the dichotomy between the lone warrior playwright and the
refined (implied effete) apollonian dramaturg. I don't like war metaphors
because wars are designed after all to kill people, while I think art is
designed to thrill, enlighten, challenge, whatever.
Regarding the dramaturgy rat conference, I also have a couch in la.
