RAT Re: What Idea Now

The main thing is does the piece interest/excite me? And then--can I get my
group or anyone else who is willing to get onstage excited about it?

As selfish as it is, I am frequently creating art/performance that I want to
see and hoping that there are a few kindred spirits out there that will also
want to see it. Someone else wrote about one of their criteria being whether
or not they could find an audience for it, which makes me feel selfish.
Nonetheless, I am almost entirely internally driven when selecting the
project. Once we go into production, I become neurotically
externally-driven!!!!

I shy away from things that while good and interesting on their own merits,
are very similar to what is already being done by other performers. So
shockingly new is not always a requirement, but something new and different
about the content, the staging, etc. is necessary before I can become
interested. Unorthodox. We are more apt to do original work by one of our
members or that we have created together or -- since I edit a magazine and
receive play and performance art submissions -- original work by someone
else that has come across my desk.

So far we haven't done anything that's been published or performed before.
I don't rule it out, but the process of creating is so important to me that
we just haven't gotten around to that yet. Of course, we're a pretty young
group and have only done a couple of full shows (as well as several small
pieces in cabarets and such).
