Really--no ads in California? No
campaigning?
Oh, how I envy you.

Subject: RAT electoral college
One thing I think is important to keep in mind in this whole
debate is the way the electoral college works. Many states are not true
contests this year. In California Gore has a two-digit lead and
neither candidate is campaiging here (has anyone in CA seen a single
campaign ad for Bush or Gore? Compare to how many you've seen for Prop 38
and Prop 39). The same is true, I believe, in New York, and in Texas Bush
has a commanding lead. It doesn't matter if a candidtate wins a state by
5% or 20%, he will get all the electoral votes. So my vote for Gore in
California is not nearly as important as a vote for Gore in say,
Florida, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin. I'm sympathetic to the argument
that a vote for Nader helps Bush in the abstract, but I don't buy it for my
state. Since my vote has already been depleted of value in California, I
feel that a vote for Nader makes even more sense -- I have the advantage of
being able to show my distaste for the two-party system and not make it any
more likely that Bush will win the White House. I think most of the
people on this list are in CA or NY, and I think it's important that we
make our vote mean as much in the context the electoral college allows.
For my state, that means voting for Nader.
And as was pointed out on
the list earlier Jim, it is PROCTER, not PROCTOR. While the previous poster
was a little virulent in her critique, it is important to get details
like this right so that we don't cede any ground to the
opposition.
