Re: RAT Gore V. on Al G. and Ral Phee

I admire Vidal a lot and agree with virtually everything he says in this
interview, except for his conclusions. He's 75 and I'm only 58, so I'm too
young to afford to buy into his pessimism, even though I'd certainly seem
hipper for doing so.

If indeed we won't see significant change without utter economic collapse,
then we'd be damned wise right now to start some serious organizing so the
progessives have actually got their act together before it comes.
Otherwise, we're much more likely to see a nominally populist but heavily
repressive fascist regime emerge while we're all milling around fretting
over our ethnic/gender identities. Whoever has the organization will
prevail. There's always the presumption that, in the face of social
disaster, the People will see the Truth. But if the Big Lie can work just
fine in this time of prosperity, it does even better when people are scared
utterly shitless by economic collapse and are looking anywhere for the
Scapegoat and the Savior. In a very small way, that happened with the
hyperinflation under Clinton and the election of Reagan.

If Vidal is right in his prediction, that's all the more reason to work
like a sonofabitch for the Greens.

Peace & joy-
Conrad
