Trained Fleas Perform in Milford
For one show and one show only, the stars treading the boards of the Mount
Tabor Playhouse (Milford, Prince Edward County, Ontario) will be rather
difficult to see. That's because they will be insects. Trained insects.
Fleas of the species Pulex Irritans (the common human flea) to be exact.
"There are over 2000 species of flea, " says ringmaster, flea-trainer, and
psycho-entomologist Professor A.G. Gertsacov, "this is one of the more
useful species."
Gertsacov has trained his fleas to pull chariots, dance on a tightwire, and
perform other circus-like stunts. While he does not reveal his method of
training (a proprietary secret, he explains) , he assures the curious and
the civic minded that he uses only methods of positive reinforcement to
teach the insects their routines. "I treat them as if they are my own flesh
and blood," Gertsacov says. "And in some ways, they are."
Flea Circuses were popular entertainments during Victorian times, but have
nearly disappeared since the advent of television. According to Gertsacov,
this is one of only 4 or 5 flea circuses still performing throughout the
world.
Gertsacov, who is in Prince Edward County acting in "Old King Cole" at the
Picton Summer Festival at the Regent Theatre, is a clown, actor, and
director based in Providence, Rhode Island. His show has received excellent
reviews and sold out shows in theatres and festivals throughout the world.
In February of 2000, his circus was selected as one of the top alternative
circuses in the United States by Details magazine.
The show is appropriate for families and children over 5. "But, please
leave your dog at home," Gertsacov quips, "I don't want to tempt my stars."
The Acme Miniature Circus, a Victorian style flea circus starring "Midge and
Madge, Trained Fleas Performing Spectacular Circus Stunts As Seen Before
(and on top of) the Crowned Heads of Europe" , will perform at the Mount
Tabor Playhouse on Sunday August 13, 2000 at 7:30 pm in Milford, Ontario.
Tickets are $6.00 for adults, and $4.00 for children, and are available only
at the door. No Dogs or Cats will be admitted to the show. The performance
is approximately 30 minutes long.
