Alternate ROOTS is holding its 24th Annual Meeting, a week-long retreat
gathering of members and supporters, at Camp Mishemokwa near Asheville,
North Carolina from Aug 4-9.
Imagine 250 theatre artists, dancers, writers, musicians, storytellers,
vaudevillians, media artists, folklorists, visual artists, performance
artists, teachers, arts advocates administrators and therapists from all
over the Southeast, the United States and even beyond -- gathered for a week
in the woods -- and you're starting to get the general idea.
ROOTS is a collective of southeastern performing artists creating original,
community-based work. Its mission is "to support the creation and
presentation of original performing art which is rooted in a particular
community of place, tradition or spirit. As cultural workers we strive to
be allies in the elimination of all forms of oppression. ROOTS is
committed to social and economic justice and the protection of the natural
world and addresses these concerns through its programs and services."
The meeting is open to non-members. At the Annual Meeting, members, friends
and interested newcomers gather in one place to share, create and grow
together while confronting art and the issues of community-based art making
through studios, workshops, scheduled and impromptu performances, peer
critique, case studies, discussions, networking and play.
Participants stay in the camp facilities or your own camping gear -- and eat
together in the camp facilities. All for a remarkably bargain-basement
affordable fee. [The 2000 Annual Meeting is made possible by support from
the NEA/Education and Access Theme, and by the registration fees -- and
there is an organizational committment to keeping the costs down down down.
ROOTS is great that way.]
