Re: RAT seattle rats/printers

The Elephant Play reading went well.

It is a crowd pleaser i guess, because it's sweet and funny and also has
these quieter, sadder moments that dmitry stealthy sneaks in.

Let us know how your reading goes, i'm sure you'll have a great time.

Dmitry is genuinely nice guy too, very generous.

This is a script that begs for a production, on it's rich imagery and
staging possibilities alone so anyone is intrigued by this posting and wants
to get in touch with Dmitry by all means email me.

Finally, we open the seagull a week from today. If you're in Seattle, please
join us. It's a project we've been working on for a looooooong time and one
we've given "five tons of love" to. hope to see you there.

Anton Chekhov’s
THE SEAGULL

Printer’s Devil to install new adaptation on the historic KALAKALA ferry

Seattle: This June Printer’s Devil will install a new version of Anton
Chekhov’s 1896 play THE SEAGULL, translated and adapted by company member
Heidi Schreck and co-Artistic Director Kip Fagan, on board the historic
Kalakala Ferry. Directed by Fagan with sets by Thomas Gregg Meyer (subUrbia,
The Year of My Mother’s Birth) and lights by Patti West (Free Will and
Wanton Lust), THE SEAGULL opens on Wednesday, June 21, 2000 and plays
through July 21, 2000. The Kalakala is docked at the north end of Lake
Union; the entrance to the ferry is at 2555 N. Northlake Way. This project
is supported in part with funding from King County Arts Commission,
Washington State Arts Commission and Microsoft Corporation.
Anton Chekhov described THE SEAGULL as “a comedy with three female roles,
six male roles, four acts, a view of a lake, a lot of talk about literature,
not much action and five tons of love.” The Printer’s Devil production of
THE SEAGULL has been in development for three years – company member Heidi
Schreck and Kip Fagan collaborated on this new adaptation using the original
Russian text as their source. The development process began in 1997 with an
initial reading when Printer’s Devil was in residency at NADA Theater in New
York City and continued last summer in a month-long workshop with the cast
to shape and refine the adaptation for this production. The cast for THE
SEAGULL includes Printer’s Devil company members Deron Bos, Matt Ford, Tina
Kunz and Heidi Schreck as well as Seattle actors John Abramson, Carolyn
Crabtree, Karl Keff, Richard LeFebvre, Ryland Merkey, Cathy Sutherland and
Seanjohn Walsh.
“The long development process allowed us to treat The Seagull more like a
new play than a hallowed classic,” said Fagan. “We’ve had the freedom to
experiment with the text and the relationships in the play over a long
period of time, which revealed the play to be as immediate and vital as
anything being written today.”
The location is an essential part of the overall experience of Printer’s
Devil’s production of THE SEAGULL. Built in 1935, the Kalakala quickly
became Seattle's foremost pre-Space Needle tourist attraction, primarily for
its elegant, cutting-edge art deco design. In 1967 the streamlined ferry
was sold to the Alaska Food Company where it was used as a fish processing
plant. Subsequently the Kalakala was sold to the City of Kodiak, AK and
left to rust until the Kalakala Foundation brought the ferry back to Seattle
in 1997, where it is currently in the early stages of restoration. For more
information, please go to www.kalakala.org.
“The Kalakala is the ideal space for our adaptation of The Seagull,” added
Fagan. “It immediately takes care of the most important scenic element in
the play – the view of the lake. It also provides an atmosphere rich with
history, tradition and culture, which is literally rusting on the walls.”
Kip Fagan is a co-founder and co-Artistic Director of Printer’s Devil
Theatre. He has directed the Printer’s Devil productions of North Street by
Aaron Thomas, Konstantin by Deron Bos, Skin by Naomi Iizuka, El Cid by
Herbert Bergel, subUrbia by Eric Bogosian and The Woods by David Mamet. He
has received grants from Artist Trust in Seattle and the National Endowment
for the Humanities.
Actor/writer Heidi Schreck has been a member of Printer’s Devil Theatre
since 1996. Her solo play Backwards into China was produced by Printer’s
Devil in 1998 and she has performed original works at On the Boards, Annex
Theatre, Bumbershoot, FronteraFest in Austin, TX and the Uno Festival in
Victoria, B.C. Her play Parturition was workshopped in the 1999 Bonanza and
her adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita was developed
during the Printer’s Devil residency at NADA Theater in New York City in
1997. Heidi’s acting credits include Greta in Maria Irene Fornes’
Springtime, Masha in Three Sisters, Rosalind in As You Like It and, with
Printer’s Devil, Linda in Hurricane by Erin Cressida Wilson and Lily in the
workshop of Kip Fagan’s Chewing Gum, Walking. As a translator, she has
worked for Freehold Lab Studios, interpreting for Gennadi Bogdanov’s
Meyerhold Intensive and for The Chamber Drama Theater of Vladivostok’s
production of The Lower Depths. Before moving to Seattle, Heidi spent almost
two years living in Russia and in 1996 was a staff reporter for The St.
Petersburg Times.

Founded in 1995, Printer’s Devil Theatre is a company of artists dedicated
to creating challenging, engaging theatre experiences for new audiences –
innovative new work combining bold acting and high production values, often
in non-traditional spaces. The company focuses on developing new work by
emerging playwrights, exposing Seattle audiences to plays and projects they
would not otherwise see.
