WAR
a world premiere
written and directed by kirk lynn

Rude Mechs award-winning playwright-in-residence Kirk Lynn rocks the
house with his first new play since the groundbreaking FAMINLY
TRILOGY. With Lynnıs relentless wit and piercing insight, WAR
explores the battlefield of our lives as we fight for what we believe
at home and in the office. The copierıs broken again, thereıs a ghost
in the fax machine, and the cups of coffee are getting smaller and
smaller, but how will any of that help us win the Big Contest? This
visceral multi-media fantasy - complete with slide projections, a
live DJ and hip hop dancing - is a compelling meditation, a
bold-faced call to action, and an explosive night of theatre.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Kirk Lynn is the award-winning playwright-in-residence for Rude
Mechanicals who has received critical acclaim for PALE IDIOT, THE
FAMINLY TRILOGY (LUST SUPPER, CRUCKS, SALIVATION) and LIPSTICK TRACES
which he co-wrote with Shawn Sides. WAR marks Mr. Lynnıs directorial
debut with Rude Mechs, assisted by Rude Company members Madge
Darlington and Shawn Sides. He is also fast at work on a second
novel, Brave Land of the Home Free, while he awaits word on the
publication of his first novel, The Smallest Myth Possible.
In many ways WAR is Mr. Lynnıs most adventurous and most personal
play to date. The extensive multi-media scenic and sound design of the
production charts new territory for both Lynn and the Company. But
most importantly, the subject matter grapples with both an individual
and collective search for meaning and hope in a world where they are
often elusive. Inspired in part by the Thomas Hobbes quote ³the
condition of mankind is the condition of war... everyone against
everyone,² Lynn says he wanted to write a play about ³the fight for
our lives, the fight to make a world we want to live in and a world
we want to leave behind.² While the plot centers on familyıs attempt
to aid their sister struggling with unspeakable demons (drug
addiction? prostitution? gun running?), the world of the play
expands far beyond its plotlines, investigating with Lynnıs trademark
wit and visual intrigue the ideals and dreams that we willingly give
up our lives for every day. ³Perhaps ultimately the play is about
escape,² says Lynn, ³How to escape the way things are. How to escape
without isolation. How to escape into the way things should be.²
WAR features the ensemble acting talents of many usual rude suspects
- José Hernández, Lana Lesley, Michael Mergen, Gavin Mundy, Sarah
Richardson - and newcomers Robert Fisher, April Matthis, Derek Mudd
and Meg Savilonis with a special appearance by dancer Anderson Mills.
The live soundscape will be created by renowned San Antonio DJ Aaron
Foreland, with lights by Zach Murphy, scenic design by Morgan Knicely
and costume design by Jennifer Kirkland.
