Martha Graham dance troupe suspends operations

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Martha Graham Dance Company, one of the premier
U.S. dance troupes and a pioneer of modern dance, has suspended operations
due to financial difficulties.

Francis Mason, acting chairman of the company's umbrella organization's
board of directors, said it voted this week ``to discontinue operations
temporarily until we can gather resources and continue.

``We have no funds at the present,'' he added.

Founded in 1929 by dancer and choreographer Graham, who died in 1991 at age
96, the company has been at the vanguard of 20th century modern dance. It
recently completed its first national tour in 28 years.
