I am new to the rat list - at least as a
contributor - I've read postings from time to time. By way of an initial
contribution, I am writing to highly, highly recommend this incredible novel I'm
currently reading. It's called CITY SISTER SILVER by a Czech writer named Jachym
Topol. The English translation (very well done) was just released in this
country. The book was written in 1994 and describes, in the author's words,
"the explosion of time" that occurred in his native land following the
Velvet Revolution. Reading it is at times like a kick in the stomach, at other
times dizzying and euphoric, disorienting, sublime. Topol really reaches into
the murkiest, most perilous parts of his guts to convey what must have been an
incredible, displacing time.
Pretty astonishing stuff...go out and get
yerself a copy.
