I'm reading Chris Mathews HARDBALL revised. It's sad but true. The modern
politician must amass power and keep his/her career alive so when the rare
opportunity comes that s/he can "do the right thing" s/he is in the position
and has the power to do it. Republican values are the problem. Clinton has
very questionable character, but has realized many good things: health care,
education, apointing prochoice judges, tax relief for the average and not the
rich american. The Republican values are fucked up: Anti-choice, anti-gay,
pro-tax relief for the rich instead of the middle and workign classes because
they still believe it will trickle down when experience proves the rich keep
right on "down and outsizing" the middle and working class jobs because
profits for profits are more important to Republicans than profits for
happiness of the most people possible.

As for theatre, it's tricky when we try and preach editorial theatre to an
audience. So many lefty performance artist make me wanna scream, even when I
agree with the good half of their half baked politics. Good examples of good
"art" that deals with politics without turning into propaganda is Wag the Dog
and Primary Colors. I won't name my colleagues by name, but I've seen a lot
of "performance art" which would be better editorial (with a lot of editorial
"dramaturgy" to make their ideas and arguments more complete) or standup
comedy rants.
