Well, we can into a long, drawn out discussion of the
role of the dramaturge in modern theatre (a role whose
invention seems to be concurrent with the rise of
so-called "Regional Theatre" in the US). But mostly
the reason I cringe is that "dramaturgy" is simply an
unaesthetic word for me. It's not fun to say, like
"blithe" or "kumquat" or "rhododendron". (By the way,
the most beautiful word in any language is
“estacionamiento”, or parking lot in Spanish. Almost
makes you want to be a car, so you can sleep the sleep
of the blessed in an "estacionamiento".)
“Dramaturgy” has a strange phonic familiarity with
words like “turd” and “turgid”, which are fine words
that are actually fun to say, so I’m not really sure
why I loathe it. But I do, and I suspect I’m not
alone.
Thoughts?
