Re: RAT "talking about theatre" (Wellman's Infrared) surrebutter

For me, prior to December 10 1999, Wellman's work spoke more as poetry
than drama. Often, his plays didn't quite come into focus.
I find myself in this position, having never seen any of Wellman's
plays performed. But I think it's generally (not always!) true of
writing intended for performance that the thing on the page is
incomplete. Such is my faith in the power of the theatrical medium
that it doesn't surprise me that a play that is elusive in print should
become powerful and exciting on stage, in the hands of other artists.
I'm glad that happened for you, Bobby, and I am even more encouraged to
seek out productions of Wellman's work.
Unfortunately, because play/scripts are more transportable than
productions, they bear an unreasonable burden in generating dialogue
and kinship for those of us who are fellow artists, yet live and work
apart from each other.
Which is to say that, as much as I love plays and playwrights (I really
do!), I regret that we cannot so easily connect in our enthusiasm for
the work of a designer, or an actor.
