RE: RAT Famous Playwrights, Mostly Dead
SARCASTIC OPENING:
Boy I agree. When coming up with the most influencial plays of the
millenium, century and decade, which is obviously a matter of artistic life
or death, we should take it deathly seriously and try to mention plays that
we didn't enjoy, didn't understand and didn't see. I can't believe people
are listing off all these tired old hacks. Like that guy Chris Jeffries who
mentioned "70 Scenes of Halloween!" What a conventional, mainstream,
unimaginative choice!! He could at least chosen play that is a little more
interesting like "Nightcoil".
GENERALLY SINCERE PLEA:
To those who want to promote unheard theater voices. Could you please stop
relying on guilt trips to get your message across? It's really boring.
OBVIOUS OBSERVATION:
Lists or contests or statements about "The Person of the Century" or the
"Most Influencial Play of the Millenium" are by their nature reductive and
silly. They are also fun. If you take them seriously you are just being a
bummer.
PREDICTED RESPONSE:
"Shut up! I have the right to be a bummer!!! You're just like Hitler and the
Nazis!"
MY RESPONSE:
Yes you have the right to be a bummer. And a whiner too. Keep up the good
work.
POSSIBLE NEW TOPIC:
"Best play that I saw in the past decade that should be produced by RAT
theaters...and here's the play and the playwright's address...."
ANOTHER POSSIBLE TOPIC:
"The correct use of semi-colons."
YET ANOTHER TOPIC:
"Shakespeare ain't shit cuz he's a Dead Straight White Anglo Saxon Man."
