That's because the poor man simply didn't know how to tip. He would blow into Munich with his cronies, and they would all get their nails done, their hair, the works.  And Hesse just LOVED his facials.  He would wander around for DAYS with river mud from the Rhine caked on his face.  He'd say, "You know, I'll bet I can beat that American at the next Olympics."  Oh, he was a card, that Hesse.  But he couldn't tip worth a damn.
