 I agree that while Marquez does not fit exactly into the genre of 
influential playwrights of our time, his phenomenal body of work has brought 
to the forefront a genre in literature
that was practically invisible before he won the Nobel Prize . He has 
inspired other writers to adapt his material for the stage, and to recreate 
with their original works, 
a world view that is distinctively, but not exclusively,  Latin-American, 
more widely recognized as "magic realism". It is unfortunate that  we (and I 
include myself) in the US, are not more informed or interested in the rare 
jewels of theater which do exist beyond(and to the south) of our country's 
borders. And to say that Marquez is not influential simply because he does 
not influence American theater directly is a sad indicator that, for all its 
proximity, Latin-American culture is still reduced to an enchilada
platter at Uncle Julio's.
