I'd like to second Trieschmann's plug for Wilder. 
Certainly he wins for most misunderstood and
underappreciated (at least by the so-called
intelligensia) playwright of this century past.

Most people who dis Wilder haven't read him carefully
enough or see his plays done well enough.

"People are born, people live, people die.  Once in a
thousand times, it's interesting."

Hardly the sentiment of a high-schoolish
sentimentalist.
