Strange you should bring that up.  I was having a conversation on New Year's 
Eve with someone who knows Nicholas Kazan, the writer ("At Close Range", 
which was great, "Patty Hearst" etc.), and we posed the same question to him. 
 "How could you write that script?" And he said the original script was 
amazing.  We then asked, "How could you hand it to Chris Columbus and Robin 
Williams and not expect Mrs. Doubtfire?".  This fellow, also a screenwriter, 
said "Well, you always hope..."
