RAT a survey

Hey, gang--

I'm conducting a little survey just out of curiosity. Remember when I
talked about community involvement? I'm curious to what extent, and in what
ways, those of you reading this participate in your communities. Of course,
this could have a broad definition, so I'm interested in what you consider
to be community involvement, as well. Do you participate as an artist, or
more generally, as a citizen? Do you get paid? Volunteer? Do you teach,
or perform other services? Who are the other members of your community who
benefit from this?

I also want to clarify that I don't believe that art needs to make a
political or social statement, although it can, to be "relevant". I think
most of you understood me regarding that, but I didn't want it to be left
unsaid. I just think that when we know what's going on with education, the
poor, religious groups, seniors, and/or many, many other groups and issues,
our work somehow takes on a spark of relevance that might not even be
definable.

Me? My full time job is working with schools to integrate the arts into
their curriculum. (Paid.) I also perform in schools as an actress. (Paid.)
In the past, I have been a docent at the Holocaust Center, (volunteer) and
am involved to varying degrees with my church, (volunteer) while I do plays
that are often against my religion at night (paid, usually the $50 "stipend"
for eight weeks of work). There are periods in my life when I don't do a
damn thing.

Let me know what's going on out there!

Donna
